Total Deposits
All customer deposits held by a bank.
Definition
Total deposits represent the aggregate of all checking accounts, savings accounts, money market accounts, and certificates of deposit held by a bank. Deposits are the primary and cheapest source of bank funding.
Why It Matters
Deposit stability and cost are critical to bank profitability. Banks with large, stable core deposit bases enjoy lower funding costs and more resilient NIM. Deposit outflows—as seen during the 2023 regional banking crisis—can rapidly threaten bank solvency.
